Cerumen, otherwise known as earwax, is naturally produced by the glands of the ear to lubricate the ear canals. This lubrication helps to prevent dust and debris from getting too far down the ear canal.
Typically, cerumen will clear itself from the ear canal. However, in some instances it can accumulate and cause a blockage. Signs of a cerumen blockage may include;
- Tinnitus (Ringing in the ear)
- Earache
- Hearing Loss
- Pressure in the ear
When blockage like this occurs, it may be necessary to have it removed. Attempting self-removal of a cerumen blockage may create more problems. People commonly use cotton swabs to try and remove accumulated wax, but the swabs may push the blockage further down the ear canal which risks potentially damaging the ear drum.
If a blockage is significant, it may be necessary to have it professionally removed. An Audiologist can safely remove a blockage to help alleviate any unpleasant symptoms that can accompany a clogged ear.
